Synthetic media and the future of evidence

The abundance of plausible fabrication shifts trust from isolated artefacts to institutions, provenance and corroborated chains.

From artefact to provenance

For much of the photographic era, an image’s persuasive force rested on an assumed causal link between a scene and the light captured by a camera. Synthetic media weakens that shortcut by producing convincing artefacts without a corresponding event. Evidence must consequently be evaluated through provenance, independent records and the accountability of those who publish it.

The liar’s dividend

A second danger emerges when the existence of deepfakes allows powerful actors to dismiss authentic recordings as fabricated. This ‘liar’s dividend’ means that general scepticism can protect deception as effectively as a successful fake. The challenge is therefore to cultivate disciplined verification without collapsing into the belief that nothing can be known.
