Nature as infrastructure

Forests, wetlands and soils perform essential public functions that conventional accounting often renders invisible.

Systems that work quietly

Infrastructure usually evokes roads, pipes and power grids, yet ecosystems also regulate water, reduce heat, store carbon and buffer storms. These functions become visible economically only when degradation forces societies to replace them with expensive engineered systems. Calling nature infrastructure can therefore redirect investment toward maintenance and restoration before failure occurs.

Value without simplification

The metaphor is useful but incomplete because living systems are not interchangeable machines designed solely for human benefit. Biodiversity carries intrinsic, cultural and relational values that monetary calculations may not capture. A mature policy treats ecological function as essential without reducing nature to another asset class.
